Little paper discoveries

Read a little. Make something. Wonder together.

Six parent-led math and reading lessons with paper activities, paired Parent Guides, and blank manual observation logs. These are public activities, not K–2 enrollment, full courses, or saved learning.

Choose one paper lesson

The grown-up chooses a starting point; age or grade is not a test. Switching lessons does not restart a running reminder. Choices pause when the reminder ends; take a break before starting another turn.

Five Stars, Two Moon Nests

Five sleepy stars need a cozy place to rest. Can two moon nests hold them all?

Grown-up setup

Today’s small goal: Show five as two groups in more than one way, and explain that the total stays five.

  1. Use one sheet of paper and a pencil. A grown-up can do all the drawing.
  2. Make two large oval nests. Leave room below for more pairs of nests. Stars can be simple dots; no loose counters are needed.

Stay together. The grown-up reads every prompt; no independent reading is needed to get started. Reading lessons offer supported word-reading practice. Work seated. The learner may point, speak, use eye gaze, or dictate while the adult draws or folds. Use a familiar language when helpful. Pause or stop whenever needed.

Paper and pencil only. No small loose objects, scissors, heat, liquids, or outdoor activity. No camera, microphone, uploads, or purchases are needed.

A short screen turn, then paper time

Screen reminder: 15:00 · 15 minutes maximum per burst

Read one paired step, then look away and do it on paper. You can stop earlier. The whole activity need not be finished during a screen turn.

Preparing the reminder…

Printing gives the grown-up the complete paper lesson, so you can close the screen and continue without a timer.

Whole
All the stars together.
Part
One group of stars from the whole.
Zero
No stars in that nest.

1. Meet the five stars

Read together

Let’s count five stars. Touch each one once: one, two, three, four, five.

Five is our whole group. We will give every star a nest.

One, two, three, four, five. Five is the whole.

Now look away from the screen and try it on paper.

2. Watch: two here, three there

Read together

In a new pair of nests, draw two stars here and three there. Count both groups together.

Two and three make five. The stars have two homes, but there are still five stars.

2 stars + 3 stars = 5 stars

Now look away from the screen and try it on paper.

3. Together: one star waits

Read together

Draw a fresh pair of nests. Put one star in the first nest.

How many stars belong in the other nest so there are five altogether? Draw or tell. Count to check.

Now look away from the screen and try it on paper.

4. Your idea: the empty nest

Read together

A moon nest is empty tonight. Draw a new pair of nests and leave the first one empty.

Where will all five stars sleep? Show it. How many stars are in each nest?

Now look away from the screen and try it on paper.

5. Tell the stars good night

Read together

Look at your paper nests. Pick two pictures. Tell your grown-up what changed and what stayed the same.

The groups can change. Our whole is still five! Close the screen and tell the stars good night.

Now look away from the screen and try it on paper.

Family observation log — paper only

Print or copy these blank notes. Mark only what you actually observe; leave an item blank if you did not see it. This is not a grade, mastery result, or saved account record.

Date:

  • Counted five drawn stars, once each.
  • Showed five as two groups in at least two ways.
  • Explained or pointed to why an empty nest still leaves five altogether.
