Poetry & drama

Complete source-unit instructional sequence adapted for independent tutoring, with a small unit-level diagnostic and separate fresh reassessment items. All named source lessons remain available in this unit. Five initial check/practice items reuse reviewed source questions; two reassessment items are original and distinct. The checks sample selected unit skills, not every standard. Written work is ungraded and self-reviewed; completing this unit is not a verified STAAR readiness claim.

A short diagnostic

Answer 2 questions before studying. Two questions sample each skill; an unanswered skill is not a failed skill. You can change answers until you check them.

June’s remark “by the gallon” is an aside because…

THE PERFECT OPENING — original dramatic scene [A ribbon crosses the entrance of a newly painted community room. Behind the podium, a bucket catches water from a leak. Only the audience and JUNE can see it.] DIRECTOR: Today we unveil a room with absolutely no unfinished business. JUNE [aside to the audience]: Unless unfinished business comes by the gallon. DIRECTOR: June, tell our guests how carefully we listened. JUNE: You listened to every suggestion about the paint. DIRECTOR: Every suggestion! JUNE: I also sent three notes about the roof. DIRECTOR [covering the bucket with a banner]: We must keep our attention on the future. [The guests step outside for a photograph. June remains.] JUNE [alone]: I can stand beside the ribbon and pretend the room is ready, or I can risk spoiling his ceremony. A dry wall matters less than the children who will sit beneath it. I will bring the bucket into the light. [June lifts the bucket and follows the guests.]

What does the isolated final word emphasize?

Original classroom text: We carried stones / across the empty lot / until the first green shoot / rose.
